Do you ever feel like your career goals are out of reach? Like no matter how hard you try, success seems elusive?
As a coach dedicated to helping my clients find their true career calling, I’ve discovered a pivotal truth: you get what you think.
The Impact of Thoughts on Career Trajectories
Our beliefs are subconsciously programmed and operate on autopilot, shaping our perception of reality.
Whatever you think you are, you become.
But our perception of reality isn’t actually „reality“; it’s shaped by the programs and filters that exist within us. These programs are often established during critical developmental stages from ages 0 to 7.
The thoughts about who we are, what we’re capable of, and how the world works have a big impact on where our careers end up.
When we have positive thoughts about ourselves and our abilities, it helps us bounce back from setbacks, stay flexible, and keep growing—which sets us up for success.
On the flip side, when we think negatively about ourselves or our abilities, it can make us doubt ourselves, feel scared, and get stuck—which holds us back from moving forward in our careers. If you constantly tell yourself that you’re not a good candidate, not a good networker, or not worthy of that dream job, your mind will find ways to validate those beliefs.
Cognitive Restructuring: Changing How We Think
To use beliefs to push our careers in the right direction, we start by changing how we think through a process called cognitive restructuring. We can do this by taking a look at negative beliefs, figuring out why we believe them, and swapping them out for more positive ones. This rewires our brains and helps us think in healthier ways.
Can you think of beliefs about yourself or your abilities that are holding you back?
How can you reframe those beliefs to see them in a more positive light?
Furthermore, having a growth mindset is key for bouncing back when things get tough. Seeing challenges as chances to learn and grow gives us the confidence to keep going, even when things don’t go as planned.
In the end, knowing how our brains work and changing our beliefs can totally change our careers. So don’t underestimate the power of what you believe.
