Have you ever taken the time to create a career plan, or did you choose your major based on what friends or family advised? Perhaps, like many, you got your first job and simply stayed in that field while waiting for the next promotion.
Since your career choice is a significant decision that affects almost every aspect of your life, from where you live to the money you have, you should take the time, regardless of where you are in your career journey, to discover your true calling today.
Find what excites you
If you’re not sure what you want to do, start by considering what interests you. Take a step back and think about what truly excites you. What topics can you talk about for hours without getting bored? What problems drive you to solve them? Once you have a better idea of what excites you, you can narrow down your options and find the right career path for you.
Try to look at the world around you and identify problems that need solving. Then, consider whether you could be the solution to that problem. Do you have skills or knowledge that could make a difference?
Don’t follow someone else’s dream
It’s easy to get carried away by the desires of other people. Your parents may have had a particular career path in mind, or your friends might pressure you to follow their lead. However, it’s essential to recognize that only you know what’s best for you. If you’re struggling to find your own path, resist the temptation to follow someone else’s dream.
Instead, set goals that reflect your passions. It may take some time and effort to figure out what you want to do with your life and authentically follow your path, but in the end, it will be worth it. After all, you have to live with the decisions you make, so make sure they are choices that make you happy.
Distinguish between calling and necessity
Recognize the difference between a means to an end and your true calling. A means to an end is something you do to meet your basic needs, such as paying your bills. Your true calling is what you’re meant to do in life, what brings you fulfillment and happiness.
It’s important not to get lost in the day-to-day demands. That doesn’t mean you should neglect your responsibilities while shaping your career. Just remember to create a plan so you don’t lose focus on your calling when tempting new promotions appear. Otherwise, you may regret it later.
Be willing to change your course
As we go through life, our passions and skills inevitably change. What you once thought was your calling may no longer be relevant, or you may find yourself drawn to new interests. Instead of resisting these changes, it’s important to embrace them. Career coaching can provide valuable support and guidance during professional reorientation.
