The Most Important “Yes” Is the One You Give Yourself

Reading time: 2 minutes

Many chances are lost long before anyone else says “no.” When you don’t apply for roles that interest you, or let self-doubt take over, your own thoughts become the first block. Your mind quietly decides what’s “not for you” before anyone else ever does.

Each hesitation, each “maybe I’m not good enough,” becomes an internal roadblock.

This is self-sabotage: your mind stops you from acting out of fear, not reality. Often, the biggest obstacle isn’t outside. It’s the story your mind tells about what’s safe or possible for you.

The power of an inner “Yes”

One question can change everything: What would I choose if the answer were always yes? Imagining a world where “yes” is automatic helps your fear and self-doubt fade away.

Research shows that mindset shapes how we see things. When you’re curious and confident, your brain can think clearly and solve problems. When you’re anxious, it goes into stress mode.

Practicing the inner “Yes”

One simple way to practise your inner “Yes” is the Three Yeses exercise. Each day, notice three moments where you feel unsure and choose to say “yes” anyway. That might mean making a phone call you’ve been avoiding or sending an application.

The idea is simple. The first “yes” happens in your mind. The second is taking the action. The third comes afterward, when you realize you handled it.

Once you’re done, think about what happened. What did you learn? And what small wins did you notice along the way?
